ABOUT THE COURT
The
Workers’ Compensation Court of Existing Claims is a limited jurisdiction tribunal that
considers cases involving on-the-job injuries occurring while an
employee is within the scope of employment. It is a court of record
made up of 10 judges appointed by the Governor, with the advice and
consent of the State Senate. Appointments are made from a list of
nominees provided by a Judicial Nominating Commission. Judges serve
staggered terms and may be removed for cause by the Court on the
Judiciary. Grounds for removal are enumerated in the State
Constitution. A Presiding Judge is appointed by the Governor from
among the Court’s judges to serve a two year term. The Presiding
Judge is charged with overall responsibility for the functioning of
the Court.
